As early as the first half of the 1990s, the EU commission funded the development of an International Action Plan for the conservation of the Lesser White-fronted Goose. Within Wetlands International, a group of Lesser White-fronted Goose experts was founded to co-ordinate the conservation measures for the species.

Unfortunately the effect of these measures is far from what would be necessary to protect the Lesser White-fronted Goose on the long-term. At present hunting of White-fronted Geese still seems to be the main cause for the high mortality rate of Lesser White-fronted Geese during migration from breeding areas in Lapland to the wintering grounds. For hunters it is hardly possible to distinguish the Lesser White-fronts from their very similar looking relatives.

An updated version of the International Action Plan for the Protection of the Lesser White-fronted Goose is under preparation by the secretariat of the 'African-Eurasian Waterbird Agreement AEWA'.
