Aktion Zwerggans e.V. Operation Lesser White-Front Operation Fjällgås
The Lesser White-fronted Goose (Anser erythropus) is one of the most endangered species in the world. Its population size is estimated at about 30000 birds worldwide at the most. Recently the size of the Fennoscandian sub-population was estimated at less than 50 individuals, which form 10-15 breeding pairs at the most.
These figures are alarming because this small number of birds can not secure the survival of the population.
The blame for decreasing populations has to be given to human activities: although the Lesser White-fronted Goose is under international protection, the destruction of staging and wintering areas goes on. The few remaining birds are also threatened by hunting.
Therefore, the Lesser White-fronted Goose urgently needs help. Only if measures for protection are implemented the species has a real chance to survive.
Opeartion Lesser Whitefront (Aktion Zwerggans) wants to help to conserve this goose species and to prevent the extinction in Scandinavia The goal is to show young birds a safe migration route to a protected wintering area. Microlight planes will serve as 'parents' and will guide the young geese during their first flight from the breeding area to the wintering site.
Projects with several bird species showed that this spectacular method is working.
